I've had my computer bits delivered and spent until midnight last night trying to set things up.
First problem i ran into was vista hanging after the first restart - i unplugged one of my sata harddrives which seemed to fix the problem as it didn't know which drive to boot off, (even tho it is set in the bios)
Now it got further and got to the completing installation point and then it restarted....
I get nothing.... Just a black screen... No buttons work nothing i had to manually reboot and it does the same, doesn't give me any command prompt screen or anything.
This now happens everytime i boot so i can't get into the bios and i can get get to the vista install.
I'm now going to have to plug in my old ide drive and see if that works, but does anyone have any idea what it could be as i want vista installed to my new RaptorX drive
Cheers |

I had the same problem when I was running duel boot basically I installed vista on a sata drive which went fine then I rebooted to a black screen also. Basically what had happened to me was that it placed the bootup files on the old drive I was using.
The problem was for me was having two operating systems so if you have make sure you only have one operating system installed then try again.
Cheers

Cheers for teh suggestion M - i only have the one drive plugged in at teh moment (because i had teh problem with it not booting from the right drive)
So now i just have the one SATA drive which is a brand new RaptorX drive.
When i get home i'll plug in my old ide drive with xp on and format the raptor drive and try installing again - would actually like my computer to be useable tonight tho |

So i fixed the black screen - Turned out something in my monitor has gone crap - works on the VGA input, but not on the DVI input anymore.
Seems strange that it broke exactlyt he same time i installed vista and it all went tits up but there you go.
To be honest i'm not that impressed with Vista - Yes it looks nice and everything but i think i'm gonna pop it back in the draw and wait 6 months.
Sound card drivers are beta - catalyst control centre wont run properly - i just don't think there's enough support out there to run it comprehensively without just 'making do'
Just gotta try and figure out what to do with the monitor now - is it broke or is it just some settings? |

vista is better than xp, its just that x64 is still in development with dx10, x32 is fully functional... but I dont see why you would go out and buy x32 knowing you're probably going to have to go out and buy x64 sometime in the future....
I can see a visible decrease in gfx and system performance under vista x64, but I think its worth it for all the integration you get between networking and other services etc ... |

it is the very one Drewcat - i'm currently goign through a tedious returns policy with overclockers and trying to get hold of Asus tech support.
Catalyst control centre doesn't seem to wanna work properly either.
Whats hey-hey running his card with Java?
Don't get me wrong, i quite like the vista look and feel - just bugging me a bit that i've hit sooo many problems already with drivers and general functionality
Cest la vie - Any help on catalyst running or if people use somethuign different would be great to know what?
ATI tools doesn't support vista at the moment. |

Yep Vista uses a lot of ram even if its just the default programs you are using infact its around 800mb
I got around the hard drive drain by deactivating the paging file this is safe to do if you have at least 2gb or more ram installed
Cheers

my joystick works except for the force feed back bit so it feels really weird and slack (bit like the chic last night ).
This was my first attempt at a install of a windows fingie so i expected a few probs.
worst was i cannot find "My music, My Vid's or My pics" though i did back em up to my back up drive.
cant get my headphones to work either so TS off for a bit until i figure it out.
Yer mrix i have 2gig of ram so how do i deactivate the paging file.
Fixed the dvd drive by just re-installing vista from scratch again and so far they are still there.
Thabks for the help guys ( i nearly went back to my playstation, never had this hassle wiv it..lol) |

DVD prob back again got the wicker around to see if he can help fix it. tried updating the drives for both dvd's,the motherboard & ATI 1900 xtx card but still nuffin only way i get them back is when i system restore.
So i'm thinking of doing a restore point then installing program then check drive still there then another restore point and so on and on and on until i can find out what prog is causing the problem, long winded but dont know what else to do .
I have same programs as TheWicker except for micro word as his is newer then mine but i wouldnt of thought this would affect my DVD drives .
Hands up who hates vista |

Aye, 'Raises Hand'
I don't so much hate it... but i have the 64bit version and there just ''ISNT' the driver support to make it a 'fun' experience.
My mobo chipset drivers don't work, so i can't run Xfire (ends up in a restart loop if i put more than one card in) and a few other problems - No drivers for my Zboard fang and jsut things are hard to find - but once the drivers are out i'm sure it'll be fine. |
