LOL! im running the same: Vista 64bit with a X-fi Fatal1ty Pro Soundcard.
Thing about it is thought, the vista drivers suck compared to the XP drivers for the X-fi and the Vista sound panel says the microphone is 'currently unavailable' when in fact its working!
By the sounds of things Smurf yee be needin' a new microphone. |

Darf- Depends really what O/S your putting on it. i.e. XP: either will do, they both work as good as each other but id say if your using your system for gaming rather than home entertainment id go for the X-fi . if the O/S is VIsta then id do some research on the two types because drivers for both cards for Vista arent as good XP.
Smurf- All i can think is to check your hardware connectivity, determine the state of your microphone, check your drivers and make sure your swapping between Entertianment and Game modes according: my mic doesnt work in Entertainment mode but works in Game mode, dont ask me how it just does? :p |

I was having probs with mine last night or this morning as the wife moaned/pointed it out.
I am using xp tho and slaggy said is was really faint. When I checked xp's own volume control panel (does vista have one?)I checked the mic settings and the boost +20db setting wasn't ticked. So I have it ticked and hopefully thats fixed it for me.
Oh what is mic enviroment fx ? Does it do anything. |

Ghetto, have you put on the X-fi software that comes with the card... it has 3 modes and you should choose Game Mode ( rather than entertainment or music)
If you put your X-fi on Game mode, then in BF2142 you can go to the audio options and tick the X-fi box and put the sound on High ( only will be highlighted option when in Game Mode )
Not sure if this helps with the Mic as well as the sound, but its another possibility to check.
good luck. |

I've found a solution.. Cheers for the help guys. the mic didn't work in anything, not just battlefield or TS so what i've done is..... Enabled the Realtek HD audio on the motherboard and linked it up to a one-ear piece headset with mic, now TS and Xfire use the realtek soundcard so voice is ont he headset and game sound will come out of the surround sound on my X-fire card - and as a closing note - Up yours creative - been nothing but bloody aggro since i got it! |

In an update - i've completely taken out the Creative x-fi fatality completely due to vista not being very good with it at all.
Realtek drivers and sfotware for xp however for a built in audio on a motherboard is FANTASTIC. Built in surround sound support, linked up and worked perfect with sub and surround sound, can treat the headphone and speaker outputs seperately, it's excellent |

I've got the same set up as Ghetto with Vista, and X-Fi Xtreme Gamer. My Headphones and mic are working well now and the sound is great.
However, now I cant use my speakers without unplugging my headphones !!
With my onboard, i had sound out of speakers and headset, and just turned off the speakers when the missus went to bed.
Ive disabled my onboard, but if I do as Ghetto has done, and use the onboard for headset and mic, i totally lose out on the point of having X-Fi.
Anyone know how to have it so that the sound comes out of both outputs ?? |

In the Xfi control panel there is a button that says ' automatically mute speakers on headphone detection' just uncheck that
Tbh, i can't say i've noticed any great advantage of X-fi, the software used to be good - but now none of it works in vista, just get a basic control options, and the sound being processed by the card is meant to speed things up, but nothing i've ever noticed.
Onboard sound really has come on leaps and bounds, and i'd say unless you want specialist music software is perfectly good for any gaming system, it supports HDMI audio the lot, so i'm happy |
