It means that either your ISP/Exchange/BT is playing up, or that you are too far from that server (Eg, server in japan, you in UK)
A ping is a test where test data is sent from your machine to the destination (ie, the server you are wanting to connect to), and is timed, so it takes 116ms for data to reach the destination server and for that server to reply. 116ms total. Sometimes, depending on the speed of the action within the game, 116ms is too high a delay in you getting data |

Hi,
Like nitrkid says it could be a couple of things causing high ping,
are you trying to connect to uk servers and having this problem? try connecting to res server and see what your ping is.
Open a command prompt window (start/run type cmd and hit enter) Then type 'ping bbc.co.uk' press enter, You should get an average of around 18.
Is your pc on a network? if other pc's in your home are connected to the net , it might cause your ping to climb.
Do you have any programs running in the back ground that could be connecting to the internet? Torrents downloading will give you a high ping also some of your back ground services might be connecting.
Spyware / addware can caurse many problems with ping , try an online scan.
Let us know how you get on
Thanx Gaz! |

The way I look at it is this ... you now have a new PC setup and you are starting to have ping problems? it could be possible your new set up is causing this ? maybe a firewall issue or router problem that needs looking at ?
Cheers

As nitro said, ping is your time in milliseconds it takes for your pc to send a packet of information to the server and recieve it back. To check your ping to a server (this ip is the res one) open up a command prompt and type "ping 85.236.101.41". Leave a space between ping and the ip address, and don't put in the quotation marks! hit your return key and it will send a packet of info to the server 3 or 4 times and tell you your average ping.
If it is showing a high ping you have a connection problem somewhere. Could be a firewall, modem or line problem. If you know the address of your local server for your isp try pinging that. A good site to easily find your isp is here: http://visualroute.visualware.com/ . Just click on the start button and when its finished you should see a number of points in the graph. Click on the points and it will give you the info on that server(probably the one closest to your ip address for your isp). Once you have pinged your isp, if that is high then the problem is likely to be at your end.
However! It is possible your isp server has a high contention rate. This is the number of people who connect to that server. Most servers have a maximum contention rate of 100, that is at peak load no more than 100 people can connect to it. Some smaller isps have a larger contention rate than this and that can really screw up your connection. To find out you need to ring your isp and ask. |

Yes it is a good ping, I average @ 20-30 with some days as low as 15 others up in the forties for our server. |
