Adding to Far Cry 2's value is the 16-person online multiplayer. The gameplay modes on display are nothing terribly special (you'll see variations of Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Capture the Flag, and Territories), but the fighting captures a lot of the appeal of single-player, including vehicles, fire-based weaponry, and a great sense of scale in each map. But what sets the multiplayer apart is that you don't need to settle for the included maps; each version of the game comes with a deep but intuitive map editor capable of letting you create everything from dense urban locales to sprawling forests. And downloading new maps is simply a matter of seeking out featured selections or hitting "download" when a Quick Match search lets you know that you don't have that one yet. Such uninspired gameplay modes are certainly a letdown, but the map editor has great potential to inject loads of lasting appeal into Far Cry 2's online component.

Finally there's the multiplayer element, which is by no means insignificant in Far Cry 2. It is, however, far less novel than what's present in the single-player. You get your standard assortment of deathmatch, team deathmatch, and capture the flag modes. There's a hybrid territorial control / VIP mode, as well as a progression mechanic through which you earn diamonds to unlock more powerful weapons and upgrades. Players will also need to take fire into account here, since it can be used to temporarily defend capture points and the like, provided the map allows for it.

Fighting these patrols is a frequent occurance.
Really the best part of the multiplayer is the map editor, which requires a bit of a learning curve, but ultimately should be usable by pretty much anyone who buys the game. Compared to other, more hardcore editors that come packaged with games, this one's a breeze to use, with little to no technical knowledge required. It's a different setup across PC and console versions, but all allow players to create, publish, share, and download created maps from across the community and use them for multiplayer matches. So, if you're unsatisfied with the multiplayer maps Ubisoft bundled with the game, you can start building your own almost right away.

Far Cry 2 also has a few interesting multiplayer frills, such as leaderboards, trophy support on PS3, multiple console controller layout presets including 'lefty' settings, thumbstick sensitivity calibration on console, an aim assist for snap-to targeting on console, and easy-to-access community sharing features for user-created maps. Though the multiplayer modes themselves aren't all that unique, the feature set surrounding them has been well thought out.

Fortunately there's no grinding travel in the online game, and what remains is a tight multiplayer shooter with terrific interactive battlefields. Flamethrowers and propane tanks take on a new strategic value when you can set players (or the buildings they're standing in) on fire. Downed players can be revived by teammates, which brings a lot of strategy to teamplay. Vehicles are in full effect. Similar to Call of Duty 4, players can gain experience as you play to unlock more weapons. Finding a PC match requires you to first create an account on the Ubisoft website, but once this is done getting into a game isn't difficult.

Deathmatch and team deathmatch modes are what you'd expect. A "Capture the Diamond" mode plays just like standard capture the flag, and gives players a chance to mess around with both offensive and defensive weapons. The real highlight is the "Uprising" mode, a game where you have to capture and hold points on the map. The catch is that only one player on each team, the "Captain," can capture the points. You've got to defend your own captain as he makes his move while trying to off the other teams' Captain. This scenario can fall apart online if the player designated as Captain doesn't realize what he's supposed to do, but assuming everyone's on board, it makes for a very fun mode.

A hungry community has already developed in anticipation of Far Cry 2's map editor. It's too early to tell if this will have a big impact on the game's long-term value, but given how beautiful the game engine is, it certainly has potential.

I might end up buying FC2, it has been getting good reviews, the map editor looks friggin cool, i just don't know how many Res guys will be getting it due to their systems not being up to par, so that kinda puts me off a little.

How many people are going to get it?

Arghh too many good games being released over the next 2 months!

Might be a bit more mid range friendlier than we think m8

Another noticeable difference between PC and console versions is the drop in visual quality. Ubisoft Montreal's Dunia Engine proves to be quite scalable on PC. Even on rigs closer to mid-range the graphics settings can still be set relatively high and the performance is smooth. On consoles, the lighting effects that sparkle so brilliantly on the PC aren't as pronounced, the framerates more jittery, the edges on weapon models not as smooth, and some of the shadowing nowhere near as detailed. That being said, it's not like the game looks bad on consoles. You still get a wide open expanse of terrain, from waterfalls to swamplands to desert plains to dense jungles, and full day night cycle and dynamic weather systems that can, occasionally, produce some spectacular vistas as fog moves and the sun burns angry orange before the sky goes dark.

The main gripe about the single player experience seems to be some of the tediously long distances to travel, but most reviews say the game is da'bollix Wink

Well I'm gonna see how it runs on my computer in about an hour, then if it runs ok I'll go out and buy it tonight or tomorrow, so far we know that Brune, Mrix and possibly me will be playing it.

Any other Res people getting it? Very Happy maybe if we have enough people getting it Mrix might consider a Far Cry 2 server Wink lol, we'll have to see how the multiplayer is before hand tho.

Map editor looks awesome and easy, even on the 360 version http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LgXqgFhpR-A

Been put off with them implementing the same style copy protection as spore, moniters and limits how many times you can install the game before you have to email the dev/pub not sure witch explaning why and asking for more privilages. To limit something you legitmatly purchase i think is terrible.

If the game is great it's only yourself that your punishing Wink As long as you uninstall the game correctly, it gives your install back ( i think you get 5 installs)
