Wondering what security etc we are all using and what you think of it.
I'm using AVG free edition, which in all the reviews i've read is about as good as it gets for a free anti virus. Some are slightly better at this, others slightly better at that, but as an alrounder is on a par with any other free offering (from the reviews i've read)
I sometimes use Trend Micro's housecall online scanner, and have used Microsofts online scanner.
The reason I ask is that in all 3 of these scans my system comes up clean, but i'm not convinced. I'm always carefull about what I download and from where. Lately my pc doesn't seem as crisp as it was. The past week or 2 when playing codbo I get a fair bit of intermittant lag.
I use Gamebooster to shut down unnecessary background stuff while I'm gaming.
My pc updates fine, except for win 7 sp1, it just wont install this, I've tried many times manually and automatically.

What else security wise are you all using that you think I should? Is SpyBot still good? I used it a few yrs back on win xp, but it caused a few probs.

Avast is a great free antivirus software which I used for a few years but I have gone over to Microsoft`s own antivirus free software - Microsoft Security Essentials This Free software needs a genuine version of Windows to run.
Been using it for around a year and has been A1 Cool Very Happy
Cheers

Just read a review by PC Mag. In their tests, which seem quite strict, AdAware Free Internet Security 9.0 is there clear winner for free anti virus. They reckon it beats AVG, Avast, Microsoft, and all the others. Might give it a go.
Did an online scan with Bitdefenders online scanner last night. That returned no threats detected either. Maybe my pc is clean, as thats 3 online scanners and AVG have all said that its clean.
I use Ccleaner about once a week to try and keep it as clean as poss. But you never really know if some of these things are doing more harm than good when 'cleaning up' your PC. If the software is doing it right then it could cause more harm and slow things down even more.
Interesting to see Grim and Brune effectively use 2 anti virus. Malware Bytes get good results for removing threats from an infected pc, but not preventing new ones. Makes sence to use it with something else. Does this effect your performance though? Does MBytes give real time protection like AVG, as would have thought this knocked performance a bit?
Brune, S&D, is this Spybot search and destroy ??

I use ESET Nod32, have been for the past 5 years, I think it's like £14 for a years subscription since I always renew my sub. I've always liked it because it rarely has false-positives, hardly uses any system resources even when it's in real-time system scan mode and it's a small install too. It's just a great powerful AV and worth every penny.

Got Avast on my work PC and tbh it's real time stuff really does slow that PC down.

Mook I think you and your uncle are the only Avast! users Wink

Avast won many awards for be one of the best free anti virus programs and in all the years I used never had a problem, it also does a very good boot up scan before it hits windows taking out those more cunning trojans Wink

Its was also an antivirus program renowned for a system running far less processes, making it far better for the gamers Cool

As mentioned in my above post I am a security essentials user now as I believe, who better to make an antivirus that the actual makers of Windows itself.

Works a treat!

Cheers

I've just uninstalled AVG and installed AdAware. Its rated as the current best free software. Its doing a huge scan now Shocked
I think Avast is due a new release soon, the current one seems to have dropped down the ratings a bit, but still good.
Not sure whether to use something else aswell such as spybot or Malware bytes.

As far as I know AdAware is not an antivirus but just gets rid of the adware on your PC ?

You need to conbine it with another antivirus program.

Yes adaware isnt an antivirus attall. Also with avast i remeber it being so popular for the very fact it didnt slow down your pc in the slightest unlike the likes of the scary norton and such.
