Hello all, I currently have a slightly older version of the i7 the i7 920, just recently I have been tuning the system in preparation for BF3
So far I have a very stable overclock at 4GHZ
I have also had a few windows issues but did not want to do a fresh re-install so opted to try out the registry cleaner CCleaner which works very well and is highly rated by many
I have been looking at the Hyper-threading part of the CPU and have read many games do not use hyper-threading so switching this off can give quite a boost
I decided to give it a go and at times my in game fps shot up at least 50fps more I also found with hyper-threading switched off your temps are far better under load, mine are at least 10c lower.
Cheers all

Im very surprised youve only just discovered this mrix,im running a i7 930 and like yourself currently tweaking for BF3 release.
Some other options in your Bios to turn off to help stabilize your rig -
cpu spread spectrum
pcie spread spectrum
c1e support
cpu tm function
Intel speedstep
Intel c-state tech
Another option is to tweak your memory timings down a little im currently running 6-8-6-1T which aint to shabby for the modules i have.
Overclock your gtx580 if you still have it.
Heres some tools to help you on your way -
Intel Burn Test (make sure that cpu overclock is stable) -
http://downloads.guru3d.com/IntelBurnTest-v2.3-download-2047.html
LinX (make sure that memory overclock is stable) -
http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/Benchmarks/LinX-benchmark.shtml
Msi Afterburner (overclocking tool for gpus including voltage adjustments and so much more)-
http://downloads.guru3d.com/Afterburner-2.0.0-Final-download-2562.html
FurMark (make sure that gpu overclock is stable) -
http://downloads.guru3d.com/FurMark-1.8.2-download-2523.html
Real Temp (monitor Cpu Temps) -
http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/SysInfo/Real_Temp/
Cpu Tweaker (shows and adjusst memory timings etc in windows) -
http://www.tweakers.fr/cputweaker.html
Heaven Benchmark (a overall system test featuring DX11 and tesselation settings...torture that 580!)
http://unigine.com/products/heaven/
Driver Sweeper (remove stubborn drivers for good) -
http://downloads.guru3d.com/Guru3D---Driver-Sweeper-%28Setup%29_d1655.html
A nice performance increase ive discovered if you havent already is a pair of SSD's in Raid0...very fast
Thats it i think, give us a shout if you have any probs.
Cheers

Hello Bulldog, I have Intel Burn and LinX which are great programs along with RealTemp.
I have also disabled similar in the bios from your list
Some nice links there I`ll check them out
The Graphics Card is the GTX 480 not the 580, I was thinking about getting a 580 for the lower temps and the lower power but it would be just be a waist of money as the 480 is still a very capable card,
Cheers

Its only a matter of time
I bet you have a dozen bookmarked already, your will power wont hold out much longer.
I think your right to hold out though, the performance difference between the 2 cards wouldn't justify the cost. The 600 series cards will be here early next year, try and hold out untill then |

The heat issue was why i went with a 580...but your right the 480 is definatly a worthy card.
Just as a sort of food for thought a used gtx480 sells for about £200 on ebay and if you have a high end model or expensive branded 480 youd get more.A decent 580 costs £360 so youd be looking at £160 upgrade.
Also to throw in the mixer end of this year or start of next year will see the 6 series cards which will drastically reduce the resale value of your 480.
Ive been caught like this and now have a pair of watercooled xfx gtx280's sat on my desk gathering dust
Anyways good luck |

quick question Bulldog, Your 580 whats the sound like? I got the gainward "good" edition with two fans, when under 100% load the noise is sooo load, hits about 82c temps (i hink), but sounds like a leaf blower. Wondering if its defective as reviews say these cards are quite quiet. Its put me off overclocking as the temps seem alot higher compared to my old 5850s. |

Hi monkeyaidsuk
Ive had a look around the net the fan noise seems a common problem, once it goes past 60% fan speed it gets very noisy even tho gainward claim it to be a very quiet card. As for the temperatures i found a chart for the reference cards and heres Gainwards claim -
"While in 3D hard loading, Gainward GTX 580 "GOOD" 1536MB shows its excellent cooling performance by operating extreme low-temperature, which is 12°C lower than GTX 580 reference board"
Video Card Idle Temp Loaded Temp Ambient
ATI Radeon HD 5850 39°C 73°C 20°C
AMD Radeon HD 6850 42°C 77°C 20°C
AMD Radeon HD 6870 39°C 74°C 20°C
ATI Radeon HD 5870 33°C 78°C 20°C
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 480 36°C 82°C 20°C
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580 32°C 70°C 20°C
So it maybe that your cooler isnt seated right or it needs thermal pads and paste reapplying.
Im currently running this beast -
http://www.scan.co.uk/products/3gb-evga-gtx-580-hydro-copper-2-40nm-4008mhz-gddr5-gpu-772mhz-shader-1544mhz-512-cores-mhdmi-plusfre
so i cant give you a comparison on noise nor temps. |

Cheers, would love to see a pick of your rig *cough* so to speak. I might look at reaplying the thermal paste, depends if I need to overclock it for bf3. |
