Server Type. PvP or PvE??

Ok fellas I know this has been mentioned in another thread (but i can't find it!).

The big day will soon be upon us and we need to decide which kind of server we shall be playing on.

For some of you this will be your first step into the world of MMO's and I can appreciate that you may want to err on the side of caution.

basically we have 2 server types that we can choose between.

PvE
PvE (or player-versus-environment) servers focus largely on players fighting against computer-controlled monsters and characters, with PvP limited to areas set aside expressly for that purpose.

- Think WoW battlegrounds. PvP will be available but only in designated areas. This means you only have to PvP if you want to and can continue to adventure unmolested if you want to.

PvP
PvP (or player-versus-player) servers have more widespread PvP rulesets, encouraging players to fight against each other.

- Basically PvP will be always "on" so you will always have to watch your back and adventure in numbers to ensure you don't get "ganked" by enemy players. In this mode it is every man for himself !!

PvE is the safe route, but with a game like AoC, which is all about violence PvP could be the fun route and also better for the endgame (if and when we finally get there)

Could everybody who will definitely be playing on release please list their server type preference, likely race and class type for their main character. Opinions please.

Also can mrscopey throw some more light on this if possible please?

PVP most definitely.
If you want pve go play a single player game, i play online games to play with and against other players thats where the fun is. just my opinion

as for class think it will be dark templar.

Normal servers are not quite as restricted as all that. Most levelling/questing zones are pve only but as well as the battlegrounds, the Border Kingdoms are still pvp enabled. Wouldn't compare it to WoW pve server as there are still plenty of areas we could go for a scrap. Like Brune says you can choose to avoid PvP all together but it should be stressed the option is still very much there for us if we choose a normal server.

Personally I'm game for a straight up PvP server (there will be lots of ganking and lowbie killing as it fully free for all) but, with this being a new experience for some i suspect a normal server is going to cater for a variety of preferences better. The normal servers still support open pvp and siege pvp so it maybe wouldn't be 'too' restricting for those of us looking for pvp. Would also allow us to have the 'pve' guys along for our scraps but safe in the knowledge they can 'go back to civilisation' if it's not to their tastes?

Most likely i will be going a Cimmerian Bear Shaman. or Stygian Herald of whatever its called (HoX)

but if the majority want to play PvE/PvP I would be just as happy Smile

I dunno if im getting game right away but being a wow veteran i thought i better make my say to help the noobies to mmos.

Bassically what you said pretty planely says it and pve would stand out as being the way to go for the clan as a whole however then there is the problem that once you get to 80 you feel youve made a bad choice and wish youd gone pvp.

Wow pvp for the first 2 years was incredble imo it was allmost perfectly balance all classes had a good chance (rogues having an advantage beause for the first 2 years peeps were 60 and had alot less health meaing getting the opener meant a HUGE advantage) but even so well played and you could fight back.

My point being here is if ive learnt anything from wow its that you realy dont want to miss out on those great momments of your ofirst world pvp kill having a big fight with all yor clan mates aggainst greater foes and comming out on top nothing will beat that .

Ofcourse pvp servers come with pain and alot of it gankl gank gank however this wont be so true because of course for some time most people will be focuse on lvling and anyone you fight will likely be of a simular level and it will be a fair fight.
if anytihing there is no better time to start on pvp servers then right away when there arnt any bored lv 80s arround looking to piss peeps of and even if some saddoes get to 80 in one week they will be few in number and with the sheer size of this game the odds of comming up against one is slim.

In favor of pve servers they are relaxed you can enjoy pve alot more and dont ahve to watch your back at all times this is nice and chilled and takes the edge of off lvling. its nice not being in the middle of a quest to have some assassin ambush you when your on low health or being killed by a ton of mobs, i guess it also means you can take more time to enjoy the lore but pvp servers get everything pve servers do you just ahve to work abit harder to achive it.

If youve been arsed to read all ive written i guess im sayinjg pvp servers wont be easy at times but the payoff for getting through those times will be FAR greater then a pve server in the end i lved a few characters on pve on wow and one on pvp and the character i lved on pvp was withought a doubt the most fun.Wow pvp has changed alot since the expantion some things better some things not but i say get in to pvp servers as soon as poss and dont miss out on that first year of great pvpness if the game doesnt suck ofcourse Wink

O and if i pick a class it will 90% be assassin simply because form experience being able to stealth untill you can see your blade in your enemy and they dont knwo your there yet is the biggest advantage you can have on pvp servers.Also i find that 80% of players allways panick and bassicaly fuck up when they get jumped and arnt ready for combat before they pull it together youl be chopping there head off and putting it in your trophy case. Im aware all clases can stealth but from what ive read on the forums the stealth of any class but the rogues is useless for pvp as you will be spotted form great distance.

Hopefully we will have a nice mix for group stuff though there does seem to be a real effort to avoid 'must have' and 'must not have' classes. Smile

I guess we need to hear from the guys for who this is new territory as the answers are so fr from those who have played before, though its worth noting we have 100% for pvp so far! Very Happy

i prefer pvp but i wont be playing on the pre release cause i was humped in the behind by the GAME online order bug.

As long as those that will play alot will have lower level charactors for when people like myself are on so we can still play together then i'm happy to risk PvP.
I used to play Everquest and loved the fight and environment, but when I was too busy all my mates got about 10levels ahead and suddenly I couldn't safely keep up and hang out with them. That sucked.

So keep a spare lower level charactor and life will be jolly.

As for charactors, I think I'll have a hot busty assassin and a buffed chest-oiled tank, though if we think we need a certain type, i'll happily do that to keep our clan rounded.

Ps. What race are people if they have different start points ?!

From what I can gather, everyone starts on Tortage Island. When you l;eave you go to your own race hub but these 3 hubs are only a teleport away from each other so race shouldn't be an issue. We can easily link up.

As I am a complete Noob to this gaming maybe I could stick with PvE for a bit as I may get spanked on PvP Question

I havnt really had much time to get to grips with this gaming style and need to maybe play the normal game more to understand it better Question

Would I be right in saying this Question

Trial by fire my friend, anyways how many characters can you have per account and server? Why not do both? PvE when alone PvP with friends.
