From IGN. Fire and weapon jams might make it interesting! Hopefully player made content might actually be quite good, looking forward to coming up with some brunetastic maps myself!

If you've been following along with our Far Cry 2 coverage, you probably know that there is a multiplayer mode. After all, it's basically the whole point of the map editor Ubisoft Montreal is including with the PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 versions of the game. So while the majority of our coverage has focused almost exclusively on the open-ended, single-player gameplay, this one will concentrate more on what you can expect for online play.

There seem to be two main points that distinguish Far Cry 2's multiplayer from the range of other online shooters out there. First, like we already mentioned, there's the map editor. This thing can be used by anyone who picks up the game to, at least from what we've seen so far, rather easily put together a detailed map and upload it online for others to check out. There'll be a player feedback system as well so you can get a sense of what the community thinks of your creation.

The other distinctive element is fire, which can be used pretty effectively to your team's advantage online. You get four modes, deathmatch, team deathmatch, a kind of capture the flag mode, and a territorial control mode. Fire is obviously useful in all the modes, as setting something living on fire is generally an effective method of killing it, but it proves to be more interesting in territorial control, where your team tries to capture and defend objectives scattered across a map.

Since most of the maps we played happened to have and other flammable environmental features, it's possible (assuming you have a flamethrower or Molotov cocktails) to light up a section of grass or brush surrounding something like a capture point. While you could still get shot by any attackers, they can't actually move in to take the point unless they want to risk their life or suffer some pretty severe burns. It's a good way to delay the attacking team until support can arrive, or to temporarily block off an easy access route. Once burned, the bald ground will gradually regenerate its vegetation, giving you the opportunity to burn the place down again after a short while.

Not everyone will be carrying a flamethrower, however. In Far Cry 2 you're given the choice of six classes when you start up, each of which can be upgraded through success on the battlefield. Between the six classes you'll get shotguns, submachine guns, machine guns, grenade launchers, sniper rifles and a whole lot more, but getting the more powerful ones will require you allocate diamonds earned through effective fighting. Once some additional primary and secondary weapons have been unlocked, you can mix and match them however you want. Along with weapon upgrades, you'll also be able to unlock bandoliers and maintenance manuals to bump up ammo capacity and weapon reliability.

And weapon reliability does seem to play a significant role, since just like in the single-player you'll have to battle weapon jams. It's a pretty disheartening experience when you're two feet away from an opponent with a flamethrower aimed at their forehead only to discover when you hit the fire button that something's gone wrong and you need to fiddle with the pressure valve to get it working again. After that happens a few times, you'll realize just how valuable weapon reliability upgrades are.

Also slightly different in multiplayer is how the health works -- there aren't any syrettes in an online game, meaning you can't just instantly regain health by jabbing yourself with a needle. Instead, you'll have to do a lot of sometimes gruesome self-repair. This can range from the relatively mild patting down of flames on your sleeves to revolting removals or harmful objects or bone rebreaks. Once your health is taken all the way down, there's a short period of time where you can be revived. So if you successfully put someone down, it's best to make sure they're down for good.

Though the map editor essentially makes the number of online maps unlimited, we were told the game will ship with 14 of varying sizes, the largest of which will support up to 16 players and all of which, like the created maps, can feature different types of weather. And remember, if it's raining, fires won't burn as effectively. Like the solo play, there'll be vehicles and plenty of explosive barrels and canisters lying around, meaning there are plenty of ways to kill your opponent aside from simply shooting him in the head.

Came into the thread with my original Farcry MP was a load of shit spiel all prepared but it does actually sound pretty interesting. Especially as it's likely to be worthwhile for the single player even if MP is a tosh as the first one.

Very interesting as if the largest will support only up to 16 players, the maps are going to be fairly small full on maps like COD4 I suppose..

Something new to look forward to

cheers

Its just a shame my 'almost zx spectrum' computer wont be able to handle this.
I have to have Cod4 and Conan on low specs. Can you imagine the heartattack my processor would have with this damn thing.

Sigh.

Is it still illegal to sell your organs on ebay?
My livers pretty healthy, and we get two of those dont we ?
