Just a quick note to tell you to stay away from NTL. I've been a customer for nearly five years and I have to say over the past 6 months they have been useless!
Broadband constantly disconnection and errors on line!
Cancelled broadband and had to give 30 days notice but two months later got billed again! I rang them up and said there were no records of me calling them, however it was showing on the system to be cancelled in March (so how did they know I wanted to cancel then?)
Been with Pipex for the last 2 months and I have to say very good so far call centre in the UK and not India!
Guy's stay away and if you are already with them wait until your've got a problem and you will find out exactully how good they are CRAP! |

With Ntl now and looking around. Is it a straight swap with pipex? or would I need a BT line back in? |

im with ntl and have never had a problem with them. there customer service has never been up to much, but alot of the time its who you get on the other end of the phone. ive been put through to some really helpful people sometimes. for example, my line should have upgraded to 10mb from 3mb automatically but it neva. so i got on the phone an within 5 mins they had sent me the cfg through an i was on 10mb. also recently ive been impressed as my line is at 25mb for some reason and has been like this for over a week now. download is at 3.2mb a sec. so i cant faullt them at the moment. |

I'll second that (apart from the speed) i recently got a nice crimbo card from ntl saying my speed was going to 10MB, my limit was up to 75GB and the price was going down 2quid so far so good i get speeds from newsgroups of around 1100KB/s and BF2 pings between 25-40 which is nice!!! also i still havent recieved any warnings despite me repeatedly going over the limit.
I havent had to contact customer support yet (in 4 years) so maybe ntl are just good and dont need to focus on tech suport so much. i recently had to sort a bt line out at work and was passed between bt, bt wholesale and legend for almost 2 weeks before finally finding that bt had f**ked up now that sucks!! |

not sure how on topic, but about pings i thought they were like 'Ping' that sonar on a submarine does, tells you how faw away from a server you are, dont think bandwidth makes much differnce as i thought it was bascially a small packet of info that goes back and forth and gives you a timing (latency?),i am on ntl as well and also have lost intenet a bit, prolly like 50 times in last year,i did notice it was usually around 2100-0100ish and for about 30 minutes,i have ntl cable tv to and am fed up with the mini search bar that never works, nothing worse than 200 channels and no clue what is on, |

that's pretty much right Private except that bandwidth will make a diff because lower b/w means that the ping packet might have to "wait in line" to get sent - its just like supermarket checkouts - the more that are open the quicker you get out |

am on a 2Mb/256Kb Pipex line and have had loads of problems with them, not only in having a fault but fixing it, you're expected to do all the leg work if it involves BT as pipex plainly dont care if you have a slightly faulty line (our connection dies at 05:37 and 15:22 every day and at random intervals inbetween).
right now I am waiting on a call from one of the pipex monkeys to tell me what the connection has been doing since 23:55 last night when we switched it onto their test login. This was only because I told the guy that I was going to plainly refuse to run the test and demand that we have our contract canx'd
on the question of ping you'l be hard pressed to get down to 20ms with cable unless you live close to your UBR/exchange and 30-40ms is about as low as adsl goes in the UK, yet again depending on how far you are from your exchange / line quality etc |

I'm gutted for you Java, I have read nothing but good reviews about PIPEX? I'm guessing it's a BT issue as they make it hard for the third party companies!
Good luck with your next service provider! Who do you think you will go with? |

pain is that the same line was used last year on AOL with no problems so we suspect Mr pipex has had his/her fingers in our exchange pies and broken something
possibly going back to AOL or to plusnet |

i decided to go for smaller providers with high quality and good reputations - was initially with nildram and currently with zen internet and both are excellent with uptime/speed and customer service - premiums may be slightly higher but imo its worth it. |

Im with Blueyonder been with them for last 18 months 2mb connection still awaiting the upgrade to 10mb which shouldn't be far off now.In the past 18 months i think i have lost my connection twice due to maintenance and its always been late at night never in daytime.Blueyonder has recently been bought out by NTL hopefully they will leave blueyonder to run as it is now,ATM they get a 10/10 from me for service. |
