I don't know much about ram BUT you have to be very carefull getting the right type for your machine otherwise you get the black screen of death.

Read all about it in the manual for the motherboard

What slots did you use on your motherboard for your ram eg 1,2,3,4 also when i put new ram in i had to up the voltage going to it to make it stable, you can do this in the bios. I wud try and use your ram in the 2nd and 4th slot on your mb first.

Some RAM Sticks only run for intel to.....

You got DDR or DDR2?

Wich type DDR400 or higher?
if your mobo can only support Like DDR333 Then you probly can't run anything higher then DDR 400+

What RAM stick you buyed and what mobo you got drew?

Cheers for info guys I to think its a ram problem.

Mobord - MSI 6712 - only 3 slots.

Had in them previous - DDR333??? these where running fine. slots 1 & 2.

Bought (none Branded) DDR400 - 1mb (PC3200) put in to last slot slot 3. not sure why I lost 512 mem when i put this in.

After swapping them all, BS of death appeared.

Just tried on stick of mem i had in previous ad no different. Crying or Very sad

Specs as far as i can remember.

AMD 2600 Athlon Pro
6800GT Nvid
MSI 6712 moboard
600w power supply.

I have unplugged wuill this cut All batt power?

Manuals and me dont mix. LOL

not sure of anything else lol not very computer minded.

Take out the mb battery for a few mins, then put your old mem 1 stick only in the first slot try that, im afraid it will be one small step at a time

pulling the plug wont clear everything but i dont know why you'd want to

bit surprised that putting the old ram back in the same config doesnt work or did you only try one stick? - try putting it ALL back as it was

if this works its definately the new stick so try JUST the new stick

if that works and you still want more ram your gonna have to get another one of those new sticks i think

I have had probs just like this before while fitting new mem.. Just make sure it is unplugged from the wall and remove the battery for 30 secs and replace.. Then replace your standard previous ram.. If this doesnt work you will need to jump your moboard..

Most mother boards have this facility. Check your manual to see where it is located.. It may be titled clearing the cmos or bios.. it will have the same effect as removing the battery you will have to set up your bios again..

How do you mean Jump moboard (Might be tempted to jump on it).

And setting up Bios now your scaring me.

Well fun and games. back up and running.

FIx.
Checked All connections again
Put new memory DDR400 1Gb in slot 1. Worked
Added 512gm DDR333 in slot 2 worked.

Added 512 DDR333 to slot 3 problem came back. also tried it in slot 2 and same effect.

Seems like stick 3 might be knackered although it was working 2 days ago??

Also would it be faster with just the DDR400 memory stick in slot 1 as i have heard it only runs at the slowest speed chip?

Mainly want this for opening other windows whilst in game, and not taking 5 mins to get back in.

Thanks for you help guys much appreciated. Very Happy

alright drew
wen i put an extra stik in mine i made the mistake of making sure that it was the same speed
but my pc runs fine with both in and there was a noticable difference in speed
so even tho not matched i "think" you will be alright Confused

Hmm You running a DDR333 Stick and a DDR400 stick?? Thats a crazy preformance decreases, as the motherboard will make them all run at the speed of the slowest stick in it

And this is even slower then when you use 2 DDR333 sticks

Hey Drew it says that "The mainboard provides 3 slots for 184-pin DDR SDRAM DIMM
(Double In-Line Memory Module) modules and supports the memory size up
to 3GB. You can install PC3200/DDR400, PC2700/DDR333, PC2100/
DDR266 or PC1600/DDR200 modules on the DDR DIMM slots. Please note
that the mainboard supports only one DDR400 DIMM
."

So there's the issue m8 !
