It can be so many things having a high ping 99% of the time its something on your PC stealing your bandwidth. Have you tried a ad-aware scan of some kind? or checked to see if anything else has had access to the internet that your not aware of etc Question
My last problem was caused by my wife downloading something called Limewire which is a music and files downloader and I found that I was getting a high ping and basically what it was that she has her own laptop on my network and the limewire was accessing the internet 100% of the time...... files were being uploaded from her laptop that she wasnt even aware of Confused
Cheers

i ran spybot and deleted all files it detected. Im not aware of any other programs running at the same time. I tried the server this morning and i got pings of between 30 and 50 but I was the only person on the server.
When i logged on to another 64 server that was full I got pings of about 150.
I did also have limewire and ares ultra but have removed these.

You got MSN running in the background mabye?
it can use up alot of resources for such a small program Smile
Mabye you need to tweak windows for internet settings wich you can use TCP Optimizer for

Oh and PS. Wierd qeustion but when you get that high ping is someone playing WoW at that moment lol? if someone is then there is your problem Smile

install kerio personal firewall or something which tells you what processes your computer is using to connect to the internet and how much bandwidth they are consuming

I ment if someone was playing WoW at your place Smile

When someone plays WoW here at my place then damn my ping is gonna skyrocket hehe...

What java said is a nice way to check if something is killing your ping hehe, recommand to turn the firewall off while playing bf2 tho..

If nothing is consuming bandwith then you might have faulty settings Smile or if your on a router it might be the problem, if you have a router might try opening ports?

Anthing can affect ping tho, i know for 1 that if there are like 12 people in the ts channel and 2 people speak at the same time my ping will go from 23 to like 66.

i have telewest
and have the same problem
they have told me its cus of high user rate at the time and they are aware of the problem and are sorting it

if you are experiencin it bring up your command prompt screen and type netstat that will show you all the connections from your pc to the net
the other thing to do is type in ping www.bbc.co.uk and see what the pings being returned are if there high then phone telewest and get them to put you on a less busy DNR

have a good moan at them and theyll sort it
oh and they dont support online gaming so make sure ye tell em its affecting all net services

Are you using USB to connect to your router? If so, use ethernet instead. Or your USB mouse/printer/headset/webcam is gonna eat into your ping.

Are you using wireless? If so, go to your local friendly computer store and purchase the worlds finest, high spec, uber-engineered wire, aka the £1.99 ethernet cable. WLAN "claims" 54+Mbps. [rant] BS!!!! 54Mbps burst rate when the transmitter and receiver are facing each other in an empty void with no other interfering objects etc etc Shocked [/rant]. Buy a wire and you will see your ping maintain below 30 at all times.

You mentioned limewire? Those programs are LOADED with spyware. Yep that's right, ur PC is probably now being used as some dodgy croatian porn / gambling server and you dont even know it...

Your little brother is downloading some dodgy late-night european movie files? Kick him off the net!! Or buy a router where you can restrict and cap download rates, ports etc and "clip" his connection wahaha...

Also do some searches on the internet re: telewest. Telewest uses the same technology as blueyonder and NTL. I use NTL 10meg, which for the past 6 months has had some really crappy service issues in certain parts of the country. The solution? I changed my proxy server from "automatic" to "manual" - forcing it to use one that people recommended was faster (I was in manchester area, and manc was dead for NTL for a while). Check out www.ntlhell.co.uk for more ping increasing tips & tricks on cable.

If all else fails, switch to eclipse broadband!! Razz

Oh didn't see that... yea limewire worst thing you could install lol...

Anything like EDOnkey or Limewire or anything related isn't good for your comp Razz

If you want to download i geuss use bitTorrent or a program called DC++
Anyways use multiple Anti Spyware to scan

Search&Destroy is a very good 1

thanks for all the ideas, what is already done is:

the broadband modem is connected direct to my computer by a ethernet cable.

Last nite I system restored back 2 weeks to see if this would resolve my issues but nope.

When i get home I will restore back to 2 months ago before all this downloading garbage was put on my machine. Spybot search and destroy only found 3 faults which were cleared.

wOOp you mentioned changing your proxy server from auto to manual " how do you do that beacuse I haven't got a clue" The only thing I know about computers is you turn it on and a magical windows picture appears. then I start shooting people but they keep getting back up, something must be wrong Twisted Evil

Thanks for the assistance once again Laughing

Open Internet explorer (not firefox!). Goto tools->Internet options->Connections and click on LAN settings.

You should see the following: the box marked "automatically detect settings" should be ticked, and the "use proxy server" box should be unticked. This is the automatic detect options and your PC will connect to the closest server on the network. If your area is under heavy load, you will get a crap connection.

To manually connect to proxy server, click that "use proxy" button and add the name of the server in there.

For instance, I changed mine from manchester to cardiff, as I heard that one was good, by adding this:

cdif-cache-6.server.ntli.net

Then just click ok, close the box, close all internet explorers and open again.

You must obtain a list of telewest proxy servers however, the one above is for NTL. Check out www.ntlhell.co.uk, or even phone tech support and hassle them until they give you a good proxy server name.

Each time you change proxy, you must run an internet speed test (also run one before you change). I like to download Windows XP service pack 2 (link here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=049C9DBE-3B8E-4F30-8245-9E368D3CDB5A&displaylang=en ). With a good 10MBit connection, you should acheive 1MByte / second (1000 kbytes / sec).

Another test is here:

http://forums.ntlhell.co.uk/ <click>run and type "cmd" and hit enter. A command window should come up. In there, type "ping 1.2.3.4", where 1.2.3.4 is the IP address of the server you want to puing. Hit enter and you will get the response in milliseconds to that server.

-------------

Oh btw - just found this (google searched "telewest proxy server") heres a better guide for you:

http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/showthread.php?t=8783

Good luck!

stop confusing the lad..down horsey..yes limewire does take bandwidth if ur downloading and uploading..its a cool programme..shut it down when playing bf2 which im sure you do...aswell as anything else you dont need thats running on the taskbar....i.e messenger ..yahoo etc...close it...probably wont make that much difference if your running a high end spec p.c...but it all comes down to internet connection...the less things youve got connected to the net...the faster or more optimised the connection you will have to the net...but also bare in mind these points...your server provider mite be over populated...loads of people might be on at once...its the weekend(like london traffice when every ones late on monday morning...IT SLOWS DOWN)...also...these companys do regular maintenance on there servers...and dont forget the server youve connected to is connected to the hip bone server..then connected to the brain server...then back to you..you be the toe server...right at the bottom...if any one of the before servers get a problem it passes down the line...SO..dont over look the obviouse..see what happens over a few weeks..then kick some isp ass!!!!
Oh and forgot 1 major thing...the patch has fooked up the ping....14999 ping <i like it...is my record so far Laughing

THanx for all your help guys.

After I shut down, msn, musicmatch and other kinds of garbage, my problem has been solved. Last nite my ping rates were between 12 and 21 so it looks like it could be solved Rolling Eyes

Whether these have cleared it or it was just down to a traffic jam on the motorway who knows.

But thanks again for all your assistance.

My ping rate has never been as high as yours though Iceman. Very Happy

Hope to see you all on the killing fields Twisted Evil

Glad to hear you sorted it. In my case it was the ISP's fault, so it needed some hi-tech haxing to get around their lameness. Laughing

I really like this analogy:

Quote:
...and dont forget the server youve connected to is connected to the hip bone server..then connected to the brain server...then back to you..you be the toe server...right at the bottom..

LOL! Very Happy

*humms: hip bone connected to the mm mmm mm mm m m mm toe bone mmm m m mmmm mmm*
